Official opening for Alyth Primary School after major upgrade

Alyth Primary School was officially opened by Perth and Kinross Provost Dennis Melloy following an extensive upgrade and improvement project designed to ensure the school provides facilities to support 21st century learning. The £9.68m project, undertaken by hub East Central Scotland, combined the upgrade of the original Victorian school building with a new-build element. A new, bright, spacious and modern school environment has been created, which will enhance teaching and learning and increase collaboration between classes, enabling a smoother transition from nursery to P1. All the classrooms have floor to ceiling windows and learning walls which include interactive electronic smartboards, with physical activity and outdoor learning opportunities increased through a new multi-use games area, courtyard and roof terrace alongside the school's extensive playing fields. Currently Alyth Primary School has eight primary classes, as well as a nursery class. Pupils presented music and song as part of the official opening celebration, with the opening ceremony. Provost Melloy said: "This major project has transformed Alyth Primary School for the long-term, and I understand there has already been very positive feedback from visitors to the school about how the Victorian and modern elements have been so harmoniously combined. The school community is justly proud of their new educational environment, and I am delighted to have the honour of officially opening Alyth Primary School today." Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Caroline Shiers, commented: "Throughout the project, the focus has been on partnership working to ensure that the new school's facilities would meet the aim of supporting 21st century learning. I am pleased, too, that as well as looking forward to the future, Alyth Primary School's history has not been forgotten, with pupils, staff and parents working with members of the local community to create both a book about its past and present, and an exhibition of memories, stories, photographs and artefacts. The commitment of everyone involved is reflected in these fantastic new facilities, a further example of the Council's aim to continue to improve the school estate in Perth and Kinross." Headteacher Connie Letford said: "Pupils, parents and staff are absolutely delighted with our fantastic new school! It provides an inspiring, positive learning environment which offers lots of opportunities to enhance teaching and learning within the classrooms and by using the many outdoor spaces available. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been involved in this project and the whole school community has a great sense of pride in our new school." Gary Bushnell, Chief Executive, hub East Central Scotland, said: “We worked closely with Perth & Kinross Council to manage the successful delivery of the new school, which is designed to meet the needs of the community that it serves, providing a modern learning environment for pupils and staff.  We are very proud to have completed five new schools for Perth & Kinross Council in recent years.”
