Project Information

The Carnegie Primary School Extension is a timber frame based construction which meets the aesthetic of the existing school by the use of same materials and colours that provide continuity across the building. The same principles were followed in the internal design, where the finishes and colours palette was selected to coordinate with those in the existing facility.

As an extension to an established facility, the key element was to ensure that the new wing was perfectly integrated within the original scheme, not only in the visible features but also in functionality. This was addressed by designing a corridor that connected with the main building at the upper floor level. In addition to this, new stairs were added to provide integration at the ground floor level.

Another decisive aspect throughout the project was the collaboration with the school community (teachers and parents), who had the opportunity to express their views on finishes and were informed of the progress of the works via newsletters.

Communication and coordination with the school flowed during construction. This close collaboration ensured no unforeseen issues were encountered during the build period particularly given the live school environment. No incidents were reported.

The new facility provides an additional four classrooms for 80 children age group P6/7, staff base, toilets and cloakrooms to the existing Carnegie Primary School, which has grown to accommodate 610 pupils and 160 nursery children. In addition to the internal provision, pergolas are used to define an external teaching area. The extension also provides a larger playground and fencing at the rear to ensure the safety of the pupils.
